The Circle Perpetual Calendar (throwback post series)

Perpetual Phenology Hebrew Calendar
This post was originally written & shared in January of 2013. We are migrating from that blog to this, and as we do I won't edit, but I will note what is still true or has changed,  and what I've learned in the years since.

This is still one of the most favorite projects we created, and we still have it hanging in our home and reference it semi-regularly.

Time is such an anchor--the seasons remain constant, and for that we feel some stability in spite of the myriad other changes that have transpired around us. Our lives are in so many ways altered, but in so many ways just the same. We cling to the sameness and try hard to be grateful for the newness.

The cyclical movement through our lives has entrenched meaning and value and continues to offer us a reminder of the consistency of our One Creator who has sustained us through every season.

We all grow in rings--less of an upward and more of an expansion. The rings of this calendar have proven to be the best way to represent all this, compared to the traditional grid--days are not checked off and gone forever, they are more like food we eat--they may nourish us and we take what we need with us. Sometimes what we don't is carried for a bit, and in some way also helps us expand--like a burl on a tree--prized for its rarity & irregularity.

So many thoughts spinning now--this reflection is better for me than I'd have thought coming here to share, yet again, this simple craft.

Kids Hebrew Calendar

We made this little project yesterday and it was fun. The girls haven't quite finished theirs, and it's admittedly much too difficult for Leviah (age 4) who really enjoyed the cutting out portion. But, I really like what we ended up with and I think the visual relationship really helps them see how the Gregorian (modern calendar) and the Hebrew calendar and the seasons all interact.

The only small change I still want to make is to mount it to something more solid than just the paper, potentially with a pointer like this one I found via pinterest.

It's a good time of year to talk about calendars and time passing, etc.

We used three different plates as templates for the circles, and brad to hold the three together. I love rotating projects like these. I'm hoping to make a few life cycle ones--perhaps in the spring when so many life cycles are just beginning.
